Be prepared for the weather anytime of year
The wildly unpredictable weather here in East Texas makes being prepared all the more important. They have an old quip here about the weather. You may get to hear it for yourself at the First Monday Trade Days. It goes like this: “If you don’t like the weather here….. Wait a Minute.” Being a Native Born Texan, I can attest to the truth of that statement at times.
I believe it was back in December 1982, if I am correct that is. I was sitting on our north facing porch at the house we had in Carrollton, Texas at the time. It was December 26TH & it was still 85 degrees ‘F’ at 5:55 PM. We were watching what they sometimes call a Blue Norther or Siberian Express roll in. Only this time there was nothing blue about the solid wall of clouds boiling down on us. They were as black as night. From horizon to horizon it was as if everything was swallowed up by them as they passed. First came a small breeze that quickly built into a roaring wind that chilled us to the bone. The temperature was dropping like a rock, we had to go inside. Then the snow started.
It was something like 11 days later before the temperature got back up to freezing. But the most interesting facts I learned later from the local weatherman. It was 85 degrees at 5:55 PM, It was 40 degrees at 6:00 PM and it was 20 degrees at 6:10 PM and it was -7 by the next morning. Yes the weather around here can turn on you in a minute.
